The Prayer You’ve Been Afraid To Pray

Some of the most honest prayers are the ones we almost don’t pray.

God: I see the thing you’re still afraid to ask me for.

You: How did you know?

God: I know because I put the longing in you. I’ve been watching you dance around it in your prayers. You’ll ask for the thing next to it, but not the thing itself. You’ll pray for peace about not having it, but not for the thing. For some reason, you have decided that it’s too much to ask for.

You: It feels selfish.

You can’t receive what you won’t even bring yourself to request

– Jacqueline Whitney

God: It’s not. The desires I put in you weren’t a mistake. They weren’t the flesh talking. They weren’t the world getting to you. They were me, planting something in you that you’ve been afraid to bring back to me.

You: What if I ask and you say no?

God: What if I’ve been waiting for you to ask? What if the thing you’ve been afraid to name is the exact thing I’ve been preparing for you? You can’t receive what you won’t even bring yourself to request.

You: I don’t know how to say it.

God: Just say it. Say it messy. Say it embarrassed. I already know what it is. I’ve just been waiting for you to trust me enough to ask.
