A Devotional To Dispel Darkness

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

Matthew 5:14

Devotional Message

Whatever season of darkness you are in, at a distinct point in time, you will see a light. And what you will come to realize is that this light is not in the distance, nor is it behind you, but it is the divine light inside of you that God reignites—your unique, pure brightness that illuminates the world around you. In this powerful verse, Jesus declares, ‘You are the light of the world’—not saying you should be, or that you will be, but that you already are. The only reason why our light sometimes dims is due to the pain, suffering, and challenges we’ve endured—but when our light begins to shine again, we reveal truth, provide guidance, and dispel darkness so that others can do the same. We become, as Jesus said, like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden.

With your unique life experiences, surely there is someone else out there who has gone through similar challenges—someone who’s struggling with their health, finances, heartbreak, or grief. But the moment we find the courage to face our own darkness and allow the light within us to shine, our lives become pathways for others to follow—inspiring them to rediscover their own inner light, creating a beautiful ripple effect of transformation.

Within this process of sharing our light, we might struggle to maintain humility, careful not to become self-righteous or prideful. But the balance between humility and not hiding our light comes from returning to our pure intention—to serve and help others. When we live with this purpose, there is no attention to seek or fear of being seen, as we understand that there is no need to hide what our purpose has always been—to be the light of the world. After all, a town built on a hill cannot be hidden, nor should it try to be.

Let’s Pray

Dear God, thank you for reigniting the light inside of me so that I can illuminate the world around me. I sometimes struggle to share it, hiding my own light out of fear of being seen or becoming too prideful. Today, I ask you to give me courage to be visible in my faith, to illuminate darkness in specific ways that only I can.

Help me remember that Jesus didn’t say I should become light, but that I already am the light of the world. Allow me to embrace this identity with both confidence and humility, so that I can faithfully inspire others to rediscover their own inner light. Thank you for entrusting me with the privilege of creating a beautiful ripple effect of transformation in a world that needs light. Amen.
