Why Trust In God Defeats Every Fear

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

Psalm 56:3-4

Fear is a natural human response to threatening situations—it is a normal reaction that even the most faithful people experience throughout their days. The goal in this life is not to reach a state of being with an absence of fear, but to shift our response to fear—to be brave, courageous, and turn to God. Anytime we feel fear rising up, we typically make the same choice—to turn to worry, anxiety, and stress. But what if we changed our natural inclination? What if we turned to God instead?

When we focus on God, we remember how reliable and trustworthy He is, building a foundation of confidence within us. It is not that we are fully confident in ourselves, but that we are fully confident in Him—that we know He has the ultimate authority and protection, and that God is supreme over any human affliction, opposition, or problem. As David boldly declared, ‘What can mere mortals do to me?’ when we trust in God’s unlimited power. By focusing on God’s work and all that He has done for us in the past, we are able to build present-day courage with whatever we are currently facing. The proof of how God has protected, guided, and blessed us in the past becomes the truths we remind ourselves of in the present moment.

This level of trust is not just a feeling, but an active decision—to choose to use our energy to turn to God instead of worrying. He becomes our anchor in any storm, allowing us to find peace from His perspective over our circumstances. This is the way we truly understand that while we humans have certain limitations, God’s power is unlimited.
