The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
Psalm 103:8
Devotional Message
The most pivotal step toward developing a relationship with God is to truly understand His nature. When we grasp the core attributes of God’s character, our minds then have the ability to understand the way He works and the reasons behind His actions in our lives. The four key attributes of God revealed in Psalm 103:8 are compassion, grace, patience, and love—each holding immense significance, not only on their own but also in how they work together through each moment of our lives.
‘Compassionate’ suggests God’s tender mercy toward suffering—His ability to offer deep empathy for the pain we feel in our lives, along with understanding our human reactions to them. He truly understands what we are going through. ‘Gracious’ implies unmerited favor and kindness, where we receive blessings not because we earned them but especially in moments when we don’t deserve them. ‘Slow to anger’ reveals God’s patient restraint and longsuffering—He holds no grudges, harbors no bitterness, even when we commit the worst of sins. ‘Abounding in love’ describes His overflowing, abundant, unconditional love, which, no matter what we do or don’t do, can never be diminished or exhausted.
When we look at how these attributes come together, we notice how they were perfectly manifested and demonstrated in Jesus Christ—He embodied this true essence of God’s character. Despite Christ living by these principles, we humans often fail to do so—our fallen tendencies overpower the divine image within us, leading us to fail, suffer, or sin. Yet, even in our shortcomings, these four qualities—compassion, grace, patience, and love—continue to define how God relates to us.
God’s nature is our north star—calling us to resemble Him as deeply as we can, following the example that Jesus Christ set before us. The next time we find ourselves feeling anger, resentment, impatience, frustration, envy, hatred, or callousness, we can simply pause and ask, ‘What would God—who is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love—do?’”
Let’s Pray
Dear God, thank you for your everlasting compassion, grace, patience, and love that flow so abundantly from your character. I want to acknowledge that at times, I fail to embody these traits myself—I lack empathy and grace, become quickly impatient, and resort to bitterness and resentment.
But today, help me grow closer to living in Your image. Help me, through simple interactions throughout my day, reflect your qualities toward others. When moments arise today where I’d normally respond with haste or frustration, allow me to pause and react through the lens of compassion, grace, patience, and love. Thank you for using me as a vessel to demonstrate your character and for your patient work in transforming me to become more like you. I’m grateful that even when I fall short, you remain compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in love toward me. Amen.
